The effectiveness of the independence of the State of Israel is a consequence of the accomplishment of the Montevideo propositions. In 1947-1948 the Jewish people from Israel dominated the territory of British Palestine; there was a specific Jewish population, the Jewish civilians respected their elected authorities (the Jewish Agency and the World Zionist Organization) who had the capacity to develop international relations. Since the first immigration wave (1881-1882) the Zionist ideal was constructive and the recognition/appreciation would come afterward. If we were to compare said situation to the current Palestine, with Gaza dominated by Hamas and the territories A and B from the West Bank partially dominated by the Palestinian Authority, the “effectiveness” of the Palestinian State is debatable. It’s true, the genocide of six million Jews deeply affected the western world. Not only because some western countries executed the massacre but because many others were active or passive allies or allowed anti-Semitism to spread through its citizens. While the Nazi genocide was taking place, many countries limited access to Jews and even rejected ships with Jews in need of refuge. Vivianne Forrester, author of the book Western Crime, affirms that the European countries left the Jews “trapped in Hitler’s mousetrap” and later, after the war, “keep them in fields for displaced people”. In Palestine, the British authorities restricted to a minimum the immigration quotas to avoid conflicts with the Arab population—whose leadership had sided with the Nazis. That feeling of “guilt” helped increase the votes to approve Palestine’s Partition Plan from November 1947. The hypothetical question would be: without the Holocaust, would there have been a Jewish State? Surely yes, because this reality was under construction by the Zionist actions in the territory.
